Dishonesty Online
A doctor blogged about a patient’s experience with online dating – saying that when he asked potential dates for a photo of themselves on two occasions he received a photo of himself (just to clarify, he is bi and was looking for male dates).
This use of someone else’s photo did not surprise me. I have found my own photos used by others online - usually men pretending to be women and some me in particular. * Now, if you are a man pretending to be a woman you would have to steal a photo. Whether the person is famous or not, it is misleading (only with a famous person you are more likely to be discovered as a liar and a fake).
I personally have a pessimistic view of this kind of thing. I think some people choose to lie about who they are because they feel they can get away with it or they think no harm will come from pretending to be someone they are not. Then there are those who are self-centered and have no respect for others. They may even get off on tricking the person who 'sees' them on the other end on the Net. Not cool at all.
But if the idea of being someone totally different than yourself is something that excites you, then they choose online worlds that use fantasy avatars. On those websites you can be whatever you want to be without misappropriating someone’s image. It is role play and most everyone understands this. I think this is the best option for those who want to engage in cybersex without wasting the time of those who want an in the flesh meeting or to deal with genuine people.
* There are folks who have used my pics and pretended to be me. If you think that has happened to you, contact me through my site. I don't communicate with people any other way and I don't have a profile on any dating or fetish site. Definitely not under a different name. If you find one please please let me know.
